Background

Derby has experienced a major win with the new Westfield shopping centre resently opened to the public. To make sure this does not unduely alter shopping habbits, Derby City Coucil wanted to do something for local shopowners and for the local public to draw attention back to the beautiful area of The Lanes and Old Town around the cathedral.

Brief

The brief was written by Derby City Council and City Dressing was asked to evaluate the Car Park as a potential media tool, and to come up with a way to use it in regenerating the Old Town Area. The main purpose to draw attention back to this part of town.

Solution

City Dressing identified a massive car park banner as the most effective way of creating awareness and inject much needed regeneration into the area. Performing various site visits, City Dressing prepared to live up to the challenge of creating Europes biggest car park banner right here in Derby.  After receiving planning permission we successfully used the Council's budget to create an 11m high, 48m long banner.

Conclusion / Success

The success of the Chapel Street Car Park Banner can be measured by the number of cars parking in the car park in comparison with pre-banner days. The banner will be in place for an initial period of 12months. In due time the succes of the banner would be able to be measured in local business potential growth.

The continuing success will be a result of the community building initiatives launched by Derby City Council to bridge the gap with the business community.
